Job Description

The primary function of the Load Planner is for the daily load planning of inbound and outbound freight, including asset utilization, identification of backhaul opportunities and creation of pickup list for the SCM transportation department. The primary software utilized by the Load Planner is IIM, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access to plan capacity based on customer demand and the transportation schedules. The Load Planner will be responsible for following the plan from the Logistics Engineering group. The Load Planner will be responsible to backup other functions in the Logistics Engineering and Planning Team as required and will support the goals for SCM's revenue and minimizing empty miles. The Planner will identify opportunities to optimize transportation or to address internal and external customer needs while consistently meeting or exceeding gross margin and service targets. The position requires professional communications, computer and presentation skills. Position represents the company in a positive image with employees, customers and the community always performing in a safe and ethical manner.

Job Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Responsible for the daily load planning for inbound and outbound freight to BMW.
  • Daily load planning utilizing MS Excel tools to determine how freight will fit on a trailer, how much equipment will be needed to pickup all freight and what scheduled appointment times will be needed at a supplier.
  • Plan and schedule after market pickups as well as concrete non-BMW freight (OC and CH Robinson loads)
  • Requires a high level of understanding of the BMW Regional Network.
  • Respond to load planning questions from internal and external customers. Communicate with customers and suppliers on necessary daily adjustments. Communicate daily route changes to operations.
  • Monitor, analyze, evaluate, and optimize route productivity. Support the goal of finding long term efficiencies to reduce the overall cost of service. Be able to learn new software related to route planning, GPS, electronic logs. Interact with internal departments to draw maximum efficiency and value from load planning and routing decisions.
  • Executes the necessary plan to attain the regional planning gross margin targets and communicate service failures to the SCM team.
  • Works toward meeting operational metrics for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety and service accountability.
  • Works with the SCM Manager and Dispatch Supervisor to execute network optimization plans to eliminate long-term and short-term imbalances and ensure customer service commitments are met.
  • Position requires weekend customer coverage on a rotational basis as assigned.
  • Maintain asset levels based on the plan to ensure adequate supply and to protect the service product.
  • Attend daily huddle and shift change meetings and update the Operations Manager, Logistics Engineering, Fleet Managers and Operations Coordinators.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Qualified candidates will have an Associates or a Bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field preferred and/or a minimum of three years in a dispatch or load planning position.
